Last year I had the change to read “The Hacker Ethic” by Himanen. Paper "Challenges to the global information society" reflects the same style. New media is changing faster the ball lightning and it is quite impossible to figure out the next big thing. It can be anything. Youtube, Facebook and other big names today have started out in someones kitchen or dorm room. The changes are coming in so fast, that every little mistake in prediction models points them very far from reality.
As technology grows it gives people more control over something - process etc. But in return it seems to take time. Everything is in a such fast movement and everybody wants to be on top of everything. Take Google, a company who has defined search and given us great tools for everyday life, is building its second operating system. Why? They already built Android and nobody wants it. It seems to be the control, the need to be on the top. What I want to say is, that technology is repressing technology. Time investment is just so big that it eats up all the winnings at once.
Himanen writes about creative economy. No western country can compete with Asian labour mass productivity, so they have to be more creative and that is what Estonia should be doing. The IT tiger is sleeping deeper than Põhjakonn and it will take a lot of curse words to wake her up. But is there even a point? Estonia has a funny position - to Americans and most of the Western world we are a punch of random Russians / Serbians who should sort they´re garbage, but most of Asia comes in so much cheaper so why bother? Anyway, we consider ourselves to be northern Europeans, not seeing the fact that real Northern Europe thinks of us, well again, as a random mixture of Baltic-Slavic tribes. The formula : generate a good idea, make it happen and sell at first opportunity will not help us build credibility. And we don´t have it. But again, we don´t want to do the dirty work of others. Seems like a vicious circle, doesn´t it?
After the Estonian basketball team lost 5 games out of 6 in first round qualifiers to European cup, one of my friends said that it is impossible for us to win in team sports, because attacking and collaboration are the two main characteristics Estonians don´t have. I agree and as long as it will remain unchanged we have no saying in neither digital or real world. For crying out loud...
